Job Description

Apprentice Security Installer

Location: Houston, Texas

Position Summary

Network Cabling Services (NCS) is seeking a motivated Apprentice Security Installer to assist with the installation of electronic security systems in commercial, industrial, healthcare, educational, and data center environments. Working under the supervision of experienced Security Technicians, the apprentice will gain hands-on experience installing, terminating, testing, and troubleshooting access control, video surveillance (CCTV), intrusion alarm, and other low-voltage security systems while maintaining a safe and organized job site.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with the installation of low-voltage security systems, including access control, CCTV, intrusion alarms, and related infrastructure.
  • Pull, route, secure, and dress low-voltage cabling, including Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A, fiber optic, coaxial, and security wiring.
  • Assist with installing card readers, door contacts, request-to-exit devices, electronic locks, cameras, alarm devices, and control panels.
  • Assist with terminating, labeling, and testing copper and fiber optic cabling.
  • Learn to read and interpret blueprints, floor plans, wiring diagrams, and project drawings.
  • Install cable pathways, including conduit, cable trays, raceways, sleeves, and J-hooks.
  • Label cables and devices according to project specifications and maintain accurate installation documentation.
  • Assist senior technicians with troubleshooting, repairs, system testing, and commissioning.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Follow all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and customer site requirements.
  • Properly use hand tools, power tools, testing equipment, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid driver's license with reliable transportation.
  • Ability to use basic hand tools and safely operate power tools.
  • Strong interest in low-voltage systems, electronic security, telecommunications, or commercial construction.
  • Strong work ethic with a willingness to learn new skills.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Dependable with excellent attendance and punctuality.

Preferred Qualifications

  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
  • Previous experience in commercial construction, low-voltage installation, electrical work, or telecommunications.
  • Familiarity with hand tools, power tools, and cable installation practices.
  • Basic knowledge of structured cabling, access control, CCTV, or intrusion alarm systems is a plus.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, and climb for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Comfortable working on ladders, scaffolds, aerial lifts, and in confined spaces.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, humidity, cold, and rain.
  • Willingness to work flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, and overtime, as project needs require.
