General Summary


This position coordinates the TRiO SSS program at EMU, creating programing and curriculum to help retain and graduate first-generation college students, students from low-income backgrounds, and/or students with disabilities.






Principal Duties and Responsibilities



  • Assist the Director of TRIO SSS Program in the identification, recruitment, selection, assessment and retention of program student participants.

  • Advise program participants on academic, career, financial and graduate school preparation issues.

  • Develop and coordinate activities, events, TRIO SSS staff meetings, graduate campus visits, and professionalization workshops to inform and equip students with various socio-academic skills and encourage students' degree completion.

  • Serve as the programs main point of contact for Housing and Residential Life to coordinate logistics pertaining to the Living and Learning Community (e.g., Early Move-In and Pre-Orientation) and for program student cohorts focusing on issues impacting their development and well-being.

  • Attend events and conferences on behalf of the program and for professional development and assist in student research to be presented at conferences.

  • Develop and maintain policies and procedures manuals for programs administered, as well as a database and record-keeping of program participants.

  • Foster and maintain a strong partnership with various constituents across campus to better serve students in the program.

  • Manage all registration, logistics and fiscal responsibilities as it relates to the program.

  • Draft and oversee communications pertaining to the program, including but not limited to press releases, reports and social media accounts.

  • Assist the Director in the training, support and supervision of college work study students, student staff and graduate students, and interns.

  • Act in the Director's absence and perform related departmental duties as required.






Minimum Qualifications:


Knowledge and skills in student development/learning concepts and techniques typically acquired through the completion of a Bachelor's Degree in Education, Guidance and Counseling, Social Work, Psychology or a related field is required.


One year of teaching, counseling, advising, academic support and/or youth development work experience is required.


Capability to plan and implement programs and projects is required.

Excellent listening, oral and written communication skills are required.


Experience working with youth from lower-income, first generation and diverse backgrounds is required.






Preferred Qualifications:


Significant graduate study in any of these fields is preferred.


One year of administrative/office management experience is preferred, including supervision of undergraduate and graduate student employees.


Experience working with TRIO programs and/or similar federal, grant-funded programs is preferred.

Experience working with retention and student success programs is preferred.


Demonstrated proficiency in computer software programs including, but not limited to, BLUMEN, Microsoft Office, utilizing Banner, and Business Objects (BOE) is preferred.
