Job description

About Us

The Electronic Systems Research Team is responsible for inventing and developing many of the key technologies that enable Dyson’s innovative new products. Our global team operates across the UK and Singapore, working on both established and emerging Dyson product categories. The team uses technology to solve problems that others ignore. Our UK team of creative engineers is growing, and we want to hear from you if you are interested in joining us to bring pioneering technologies from concept to reality in innovative consumer products, and build technology demonstrations and proof of concept product prototypes. The team cover a diverse range of research topics including power electronics, sensor technology, machine learning, embedded systems and embedded software. We work closely with internal Dyson teams, external research institutions and suppliers to consider all aspects of complex products including thermal design, optics, electromagnetics, aero-acoustics, mechanical design, microbiology and compliance. We are looking for inquisitive engineers who can take ownership of technical challenges and drive solutions through to completion to develop the electronic systems for the next generation of Dyson products.

About the Role

We are looking for an Associate Principal Embedded Software Engineer to join the Power Electronics discipline of our Research team, based in Malmesbury, Wiltshire, U.K.

The Associate Principal role means being a technical leader in efficient embedded software in at least one field of power electronics such as motor control, power conversion, battery management, etc.

You will be working within a team of multidisciplinary engineers taking new ideas to a prototype level prior to transfer to our development teams.

The role will involve:

  • Developing software for power electronic systems including motor drives, battery management systems, chargers, heater control systems and other power conversion architectures.
  • Creating and reviewing resource efficient embedded software on microcontrollers.
  • Leading one or more electronics software research projects.
  • Researching emerging technologies through technical papers, patents and collaboration with external partners.
  • Designing, simulating, building and testing demonstration rigs and prototype systems to assess the feasibility of new technologies and products.
  • Coaching and mentoring to help develop capabilities in the team and drive towards more efficient, better quality and structured software.
  • Managing and developing our internal embedded software development process and tools.
  • Working with suppliers to help build business relationships to shape external microcontroller roadmaps for our business needs.
  • Selecting and evaluating current and next-gen microcontrollers to optimise cost, size, efficiency and performance.
  • Pursuing software optimisation opportunities to drive business value.
  • Working with cross-functional teams to plan project activities and take responsibility for technical delivery of embedded software.
  • Creating clear technical reports and presenting design concepts, test results and recommendations to stakeholders
  • Identifying technical risks, proposing mitigation strategies and sharing lessons learnt to drive continuous self-improvement and team improvement.

About You
