Job description

Science Systems and Applications Inc. (SSAI) is seeking a candidate to serve as an Associate Scientific Programmer/Analyst at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). This full-time analyst will leverage data from a family of waveform sensors to understand and improve development/operation of the sensors and/or improve the precision and accuracy of data products derived from the sensors. The team is composed of world leaders in the development and deployment of waveform recording laser altimeter (lidar) systems for surface mapping and characterization. Data from the team’s lidars are available globally and are used to characterize and monitor surface features such as vegetation, sea ice and ice sheets.

Key Responsibilities:

  • System enhancements to real time user interfaces and in-flight data quality assurance displays.
  • Developing and enhancing approaches for waveform lidar data analysis for deriving products.
  • Calibrate/validate air and spaceborne sensor data.
  • Troubleshoot data processing and quality issues.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree (B.S.) in a Physical Science discipline and 1 to 2 years of relevant experience in scientific programming.
  • Proficiency in scientific programming languages such as Python, IDL, MATLAB, or similar tools is required for data processing and analysis tasks.
  • Experience with signal processing for space or earth science applications.
  • Experience developing data visualizations to communicate results to scientific audiences.
  • Familiarity with airborne remote sensing instruments, field campaign data, or multi-sensor data integration.
  • Enthusiasm for interdisciplinary, team-oriented research.
  • US Permanent Residency or US Citizenship required.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Master's degree (M.S.) in Earth Science, Atmospheric Science, Computer Science, Space Science, or other related discipline.
