Job Description

ZAP Engineering & Construction Services, Inc.

CONSTRUCTION PROJECT MANAGER

Mechanical Construction | Oil & Gas | Exempt

WHO WE ARE

ZAP is a full-service engineering, design, and construction management firm servicing the oil & gas, heavy industrial, mining, and manufacturing sectors. From our Lakewood, Colorado office, we execute projects across North America, spanning from California to Florida and Canada down to Mexico. Our projects range in size from simple engineering studies or maintenance repairs to full-scale design of extensive facilities. ZAP operates at a fast pace while providing a team-centric approach to our work.

We are looking for a construction project leader who has run real field work — managed superintendents and craft, negotiated subcontracts, carried a project budget, and answered to the client for safety, schedule, and cost. If that is your track record, we want to talk.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Construction Project Manager owns the delivery of ZAP’s self-perform projects from mobilization to closeout. You own the field, the budget, the subcontracts, the construction schedule, and the client relationship for the construction scope — and you direct a General Superintendent and field organization that installs the work.

Your scope is mechanical construction: underground piping, equipment setting with cranes, equipment dress-out, structural steel pipe racks and platforms, in-rack piping with welding and fit-up crews, pressure testing, and reinstatement of piping systems. On integrated projects you coordinate with the EPC Project Manager and ZAP engineering to ensure a seamless design-to-construction handoff.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Field Execution & Project Delivery

  • Own safe, on-time, on-budget delivery of the construction project. Direct the General Superintendent and field organization; set execution strategy, sequencing, and milestones.
  • Drive field productivity and remove obstacles. Plan and resource manpower, equipment, and materials across the project.

Client & Commercial Management

  • Own the client relationship for the construction scope. Lead progress reviews and formal communications.
  • Negotiate and administer change orders and scope deviations. Protect project margin and manage commercial disputes proactively.
  • Oversee billing, collections, and financial close for the project.

Estimating, Cost, P&L & Schedule Control

  • Lead or support construction estimating — quantity take-offs, labor/equipment/material pricing, and bid and budget development for new work, change orders, and scope additions.
  • Own the project cost and schedule baseline and the project P&L. Track committed costs, actuals, earned value, and forecast-to-complete.
  • Identify cost and schedule risks early. Build short-interval look-ahead and recovery plans. Present progress dashboards to ZAP leadership and the client.

Procurement & Subcontracts

  • Develop scopes of work and lead subcontractor pre-qualification, competitive bid, negotiation, and award.
  • Administer subcontracts: manage performance, back-charges, schedule compliance, and commercial close. Manage vendor and equipment relationships.

Safety & Quality

  • Own safety as a personal value — visible on site, embedded in every plan, enforced without exception. Ensure compliance with OSHA and client/ZAP HSE programs in partnership with the Site Safety Manager.
  • Ensure construction work meets contract specifications and codes. Oversee QA/QC, punch list, mechanical completion, and turnover.

Team Leadership

  • Develop the General Superintendent and field/project staff. Set expectations, give feedback, and build a culture of ownership and high performance.

COMPETENCIES REQUIRED FOR SUCCESS

These are the competencies that define an A-player Construction PM at ZAP. They are not aspirational — they are the bar.

01

Field Execution Leadership

Commands the field through the General Superintendent. Keeps crews sequenced, productive, and accountable. Knows how the work goes in and what good looks like.

02

Commercial & Contract Management

Protects project margin with commercial precision. Negotiates change orders from a position of strength. Reads contract language fluently and does not let scope creep go undocumented.

03

Cost & P&L Ownership

Owns the project budget and P&L. Tracks earned value, identifies variance early, and drives recovery before it becomes a crisis.

04

Schedule Control

Owns the construction schedule. Builds look-aheads, forecasts to complete with precision, and drives recovery plans when work slips.

05

Procurement & Subcontract Management

Develops scopes, negotiates subcontracts, and manages subs and vendors to delivery commitments and quality — runs back-charges without flinching.

06

Client Relationship & Presence

Manages the client relationship for construction. Delivers bad news with credibility and a plan. Is the face of ZAP Construction on the project.

07

Safety Culture Ownership

Safety starts at the top. Owns it as a personal value — visible on-site, embedded in every plan, enforced without exception.

08

Risk Management & Decision-Making

Identifies and quantifies field and commercial risk, owns mitigation, and makes hard calls under uncertainty — escalating with a recommendation, not just a problem.

09

Team Leadership (Managing the Field)

Develops the General Superintendent and field staff. Sets expectations, gives feedback, and builds a team culture of ownership and high performance.

10

Organized Execution Under Pressure

Manages a complex field project over its full duration without losing track of details. Uses systems, follows ZAP procedures, and delegates appropriately.

WHY ZAP
