Job Description
A typical day in this role begins by reviewing the condition and availability of the district’s vehicle fleet, checking for newly reported mechanical concerns, and prioritizing maintenance and repair needs. The position coordinates daily work assignments, monitors preventive maintenance schedules, and ensures buses, vans, service vehicles, and equipment are safe and ready for operation.
Throughout the day, the position works with transportation staff, vendors, and district personnel to address repairs, obtain parts, manage outside services, and minimize vehicle downtime. Responsibilities also include maintaining accurate service and inspection records, monitoring parts inventory and repair costs, and ensuring compliance with applicable safety, inspection, and regulatory requirements.
The day may also involve responding to unexpected breakdowns or urgent maintenance issues, reviewing fleet performance, approving purchases or repairs, and identifying opportunities to improve efficiency and control costs. Before the end of the day, the position confirms that priority work has been completed, updates maintenance records, and prepares for upcoming service needs to support safe and uninterrupted district operations

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Required:
- Associate degree or equivalent postsecondary credential in Automotive Technology, Fleet Management, Business Administration, or a related field (equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of a degree)
- Michigan recognized certification in diesel engines, heavy-equipment repair, or a related field
- Knowledge of and experience with diesel engines, braking systems, electrical systems, computerized diagnostics, preventive maintenance, school bus safety equipment, and applicable state and federal inspection requirements
- Three (3) to five (5) years of experience as a diesel mechanic
Preferred:
- Three (3) to five (5) years of experience as a school bus mechanic
- ASE School Bus Technician certification
- School-bus-specific training involving air brakes, electrical systems, wheelchair lifts, safety equipment, emergency systems, and applicable inspection requirements.
- Demonstration of ongoing manufacturer, diagnostic-equipment, workplace-safety, and regulatory training.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, and REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED
- Michigan recognized certification in diesel engines, heavy-equipment repair, or a related field
- CDL with the appropriate endorsements necessary to drive a school bus in Michigan
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
250 Days, Salaried, Exempt
Grade - F
$64,000 - $83,200 (new hire range)
