Job Summary

Provides primary instruction for prehospital-related and other similar courses, including the medical school's EMT Program. Utilizes consultation, evaluation, facilitation, curriculum development, and instructional skill to develop educational support strategies for all courses of instruction. Serves as a resource to students, preceptors, mentors, and others while working under the direct supervision of the Manager, EMT Education Program. Attend all planning and development meetings and will assist the Director to ensure all adjunct faculty are qualified and performing as expected. Assist in training Standardized Patients to portray clinical scenarios and assess students in communication, history taking and physical examination skills and clinical procedural skills as required.

Essential Functions

  • Develops curriculum and provides instruction for courses offered.  Teaches any assigned course or skills session in EMT program by employing appropriate teaching strategies and record keeping as relating course work to published objectives and demonstrate professional effective interaction with students.

  • Prepares and posts educational content, outlines, and announcements and services as a secondary point of contact for all communications for the EMT Course.  Write articles, reports, manuals, and handouts, and prepares self-directed learning material for specific aspects of curriculum and implements the use of new instructional systems as they are developed.

  • Assists and coordinates strategic planning and goal setting for the EMT program and the development of curriculum and establishes guidelines for educational programs.  Receives and processes all EMT ambulance experiential evaluation forms from each student shift to ensure appropriate student grades are posted.  Ensures that all instructors are current with required certifications, continuing education requirements, and are provided with the necessary resources to carry out all educational programs.

  • Assists in developing, implementing and evaluating a process for assessing students and prospective students through every course of instruction.  Assists in ensuring that all student records are in compliance with State mandates required for the EMT Program.  Ensures the State certification is maintained.Creates and maintain an appropriate professional learning environment in class and labs.  Conduct appropriate assessments of student learning and provide feedback to students in a timely manner.  Advises the Program Director and students on alternate methods of problem solving or recommends specific solutions utilizing knowledge of theory, principles and technology of adult education or other methods, procedures, or practices.  Assists and/or coordinates in the design of tests, educational tools, and QA & QI of Criteria to measure the effectiveness of educational interventions.  In conjunction with Director, defines needs or problems and conducts studies and survey to analyze data for use in educational priority setting.

  • Participates in professional growth activities within the department.  Assists in research opportunities within the program. Conducts appropriate prehospital research and participates in interdisciplinary research. 

  • Assists with the coordination of advertising, searching and interviewing clinical faculty/adjunct faculty.  Defines policies and procedures to improve operational and educational programs.  Works with various educational, administrative, and information technology departments to develop a community paramedic program in accordance with DHEC-approved standards.  Maintains close working relationships with faculty and staff throughout the health system and other allied health organizations.  In coordination with the Program Director, responsible for department strategic planning and goal setting, formulation objectives and action plans, and implementing new programs.  serves on committees involved with courses of instruction.

  • Organizes and submits faculty requests for educational materials to the program director.  Maintain records from meetings as required.  Reviews all evaluation forms and other records from students during the EMT Course.  Ensures all processes for Student Health are followed when contaminated or other exposures occur during the clinical experiences and serves as the liaison between the student and Employee Health.  Maintains inventory of all equipment and ensure that all is in working order.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory/Management Responsibilities

This is a non-management job that will report to a supervisor, manager, director or executive.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education - Bachelor's degree in clinical or scientific related field of study.

  • Experience - Two (2) years of direct pre-hospital education experience ​

In Lieu Of

  • In lieu of education and experience noted above, an Associate degree and four (4) years of related experience may be considered.

  • In lieu of education and experience noted above, High school diploma/equivalent and ten (10) years EMS related experience may be considered.

Required Certifications, Registrations, Licenses

  • Current EMT - Paramedic License (State in which work is performed and National)

  • EMT Instructor License (Paramedic Instructor license preferred) - current licensure or must be obtained within 6 months to 1 year of hire date

  • ACLS, BCLS, PALS, PHTLS instructor certification - current licensure or must be obtained within 3 months of hire

  • A valid driver’s license; an acceptable motor vehicle record, as defined by the Acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) Chart; and proof of auto insurance.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology

  • Knowledge of local, regional, state and national rules governing all levels of EMT performance
