Engineering Manager in Back End - LLM (Gurugram based relocation provided)

In Agoda’s Back End Engineering department, we build the scalable, fault-tolerant systems and APIs that host our core business logic. Our systems cover all major areas of our business: inventory and pricing, product information, customer data, communications, partner data, booking systems, payments, and more. These mission-critical systems change frequently with dozens of releases per day, so we must employ state-of-the-art CI/CD and testing techniques in order to make sure everything works without any downtime. We also ensure that our systems are self-healing, responding gracefully to extreme loads or unexpected input. In order to accomplish this, we use state-of-the-art languages like Scala and Go, data technologies like Kafka and Aerospike, and agile development practices. Most importantly though, we hire great people from all around the world and empower them to be successful. Whether it’s building new projects like Flights and Packages or reimagining our existing business, you’ll make a big impact as part of the Back End Engineering team. 

The Opportunity:

The Engineering Manager role at Agoda is one of the most significant and challenging roles at the company. The right candidate is both highly hands-on, with strong engineering principles and demonstrates exceptional leadership and people development skills.
We are looking for an Engineering Manager to lead one or more of our engineering teams. This role will focus on building and operating scalable backend platforms and services that support Agoda machine learning capabilities.
The ideal candidate will bring strong backend engineering expertise, sound architectural judgment, and a passion for building reliable, high-performing systems. Experience working with machine learning or Large Language Models is a plus, but is not required.

In this Role, you'll get to: 

• Stay hands-onby writing and reviewing code, contributing to system design, and providing expert-level coaching and guidance to engineers.
• Lead backend engineering initiatives involving scalable, reliable, and fault-tolerant distributed systems.
• Drive technical directionby making strong architectural decisions and ensuring systems are designed, engineered, and maintained to a high standard.
• Collaborate across disciplineswith Product, Data Science, and other engineering teams to deliver impactful technology solutions.
• Own systems throughout their lifecycle, from design and development to deployment, operation, monitoring, and continuous improvement.
• Promote engineering excellence through automation, effective development practices, operational ownership, and data-driven decision-making.
• Develop people and teams by inspiring engineers, supporting career growth, attracting strong talent, and creating an environment where individuals can achieve their full potential.

What you'll Need to Succeed: 

• Strong backend engineering experience, with a track record of building and operating scalable production systems.
• Extremely proficient in at least one programming language, such as Java, Scala, or C#.
• Strong experience in systems architecture, particularly complex, scalable, and fault-tolerant distributed systems.
• Demonstrable experience as a system owner with operational responsibility.
• Experience building and operating backend services, APIs, and platforms at scale.
• Strong understanding of DevOps principles, including automation, CI/CD, observability, and operational excellence.
• Good understanding of application security and secure software development practices.
• Experience working successfully in an Agile development environment.
• Previous experience leading engineering teams with five or more direct reports.
• Ability to operate autonomously, make effective decisions, set KPIs, and demonstrate a strong sense of ownership.

It's Great if you have:

• Experience working with machine learning systems or production ML applications.
• Familiarity with Large Language Models and AI-enabled products.
• Experience in content, media, image processing, or related technology domains.
• Experience partnering with Data Science teams to deliver production-ready solutions.
• Proficiency in more than one programming language.

This position is based in Gurugram, India. Relocation package will be provided.
