Job description

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Delaware invites nominations and applications for faculty positions in the areas of analog front end design, embedded systems, advanced sensors and hardware integration.  The University of Delaware is also seeking applicants as part of a University-wide “cluster” recruitment effort, at the Assistant or Associate Professor levels, in the foundations of data science.   For this cluster hire, nominations and applications are sought in the development of the underlying theory, tools, and techniques necessary to extract meaning from large, complex or unstructured data sets. This position will expand research in data science and will support a new Data Science Institute and degree programs, complementing ongoing departmental hiring efforts. This cluster hire seeks interdisciplinary researchers attentive to the forefront of data science methodology, and for the cluster hire, interdepartmental joint appointments or more traditional departmental appointments are possible in any college of the university.

UD ECE educates 700 undergraduate and graduate students, and conducts $10M/year in sponsored research. The University of Delaware combines a rich history in engineering with a commitment to undergraduate and graduate education, and scholarly excellence. The University ranks among the top 100 universities in federal R&D support for science and engineering, with external funding exceeding $200 million annually. Supported by state-of-the-art facilities, research is conducted across all seven colleges and numerous interdisciplinary institutes and centers including the newly established Data Science Institute.  The main campus in Newark, Delaware, provides the amenities of a vibrant college town with convenient access to the major cities of the East Coast. The recently opened 194,000-square-foot Harker Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Laboratory greatly expands opportunities and resources for interdisciplinary research, and the 272-acre Science, Technology and Advanced Research (STAR) campus offers additional opportunities for academic and commercial collaborative research.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in computer engineering, computer science, applied physics, electrical engineering, or a closely related field. Moreover, candidates should (1) have demonstrated outstanding research records, (2) have the potential or very strong record to successfully secure competitive research awards from federal, state, and industry sponsors, (3) have a passion and ability to teach core undergraduate courses, and (4) have the ability to integrate research with teaching at the graduate level. Candidates are expected to supervise Master’s and Ph.D. students as well as mentor undergraduate research.

The University of Delaware is an equal opportunity employer. Women and members of historically underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.  The University's Notice of Non-Discrimination can be viewed at:www.udel.edu/aboutus/legalnotices.html.

Applications for the ECE Department position in the areas of analog front end design, embedded systems, advanced sensors and hardware integration should be submitted online to http://apply.interfolio.com/56698, whileUniversity-wide cluster applications should be submitted to https://apply.interfolio.com/55764.  Applications should consist of a short cover letter, curriculum vitae, separate statements of research and teaching interests, and the names and contact information for four references.  Review of ECE Department applications will begin immediately, and review of the cluster applications will commence on November 15, 2018.   Reviews will continue until the positions are filled. Applications at tenured ranks will be kept confidential. We desire to fill the positions by September 1, 2019, but will consider later dates.  For additional information about the ECE Department positions, please contact the ECE Department Chair, Kenneth Barner, at [email protected]. For additional information about the University-wide “cluster” position, please contact Ms. Lynn Popowich at [email protected].
