About the role...

We have an exciting opportunity for a Highways Engineer to join WSP Local Government teams based in either our Exeter or Taunton offices. You’ll be part of a highly collaborative team delivering a wide range of significant highways, bridges, and infrastructure projects across the County for several Local Authority clients in the region.

Based in WSP’s Exeter or Taunton offices you will work within a team of established professionals with an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the management of highways related construction in the county.  You will be further supported by colleagues from across WSP who provide additional resources and specialist expertise to deliver high quality services.

Working closely with colleagues across our Local Government team, and our wider multi-disciplinary teams,  you will play a key role in the technical delivery of projects; contributing your expertise to ensure high-quality, efficient, and innovative design solutions.

This is an excellent time to join WSP in the southwest, with a major programme of transport and infrastructure improvements on the horizon. As a Highways Engineer, your responsibilities will include:

Key Responsibilities

  • Developing highway designs on multi-disciplinary projects through various stages of the project lifecycle.
  • Ensuring projects are delivered to programme, budget, technical standards, and legal requirements.
  • Assisting Project Managers with planning, programming, technical input, pricing of project briefs, proposals, and cost estimation.
  • Preparing design documentation, drawings, reports, and technical submissions.
  • Working across a portfolio of varied multi-disciplinary projects simultaneously.
  • Collaborating with clients, stakeholders, and internal teams to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Supporting site-based activities on an ad hoc basis, including supervision and monitoring contractor compliance with contract requirements.

What we will be looking for you to demonstrate…

  • A passion for design and a drive to develop innovative, practical engineering solutions.
  • A degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent experience within a highway design environment.
  • Experience in multidisciplinary highway design across different project stages.
  • Technical knowledge in areas such as road geometry, junction design, active travel schemes, drainage systems, road restraint systems, and traffic signs/road markings.
  • Proficiency in relevant design software such as Autodesk Civil 3D, Bentley OpenRoads Designer, InfoDrainage and/or PDS.
