Your Opportunity

Stantec is seeking a Process Engineer to join our team to engage in projects across the full project lifecycle from concept selection through detailed engineering. The role supports projects ranging from conventional oil and gas, SAGD, gas processing, energy transition, and more. 

The successful candidate will act as a Process Engineer under the leadership of a Senior Process Engineer or Process Lead.  Your role will include evaluating, selecting, specifying, sizing, and documenting process systems, equipment, utilities, relief systems, piping, and instrumentation requirements. You will complete process simulations, engineering calculations, technical studies, design deliverables, field data gathering, and construction and commissioning support in accordance with project requirements, applicable codes and standards, client specifications, and Stantec quality and safety procedures.  This is an Edmonton or Calgary based position and reports to the Process Engineering and Technical Safety Manager. 

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of the process lead, complete process engineering design and analysis activities on projects of varying size and complexity, from concept development and feasibility studies through FEED, detailed engineering, construction support, commissioning, and start-up.
  • Responsibilities include preparing, checking, and supporting technical deliverables; coordinating with other engineering disciplines; documenting assumptions and design decisions; resolving technical issues; and completing assigned work in a timely, thorough, and organized manner
  • Ensure process design and deliverables meet the applicable regulatory requirements while satisfying Stantec’s and the client’s standards. 
  • Perform peer reviews and checking of deliverables prepared by other process engineers. 
  • Complete tasks in a timely, thorough, and organized manner. Tasks may include, but are not limited to:
    • Development and review of process simulations using HYSYS.
    • Development and review of engineering drawings such as PFDs and P&IDs.
    • Generation and documentation of hydraulic analysis results and study reports.
    • Performing adequacy checks and evaluation of new and/or existing equipment.
    • Sizing calculations for equipment, lines, and instrumentation.
    • Documentation of calculations performed.
    • Generation of documents such as heat & material balance tables, line designation tables, PSV lists, SDK/cause and effect diagrams, set point lists, car seal lists, operating philosophies, equipment datasheets, and instrumentation datasheets.
  • Participate in and provide technical input to P&ID reviews, interdisciplinary design reviews, model reviews, HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA, SIL, constructability reviews, operability reviews, and other process safety or risk review activities as required.
  • Perform fieldwork to verify existing conditions, collect process and equipment data, confirm tie-ins, review equipment installations, support site queries, and provide home-office support during construction, commissioning, start-up, and troubleshooting activities. 
  • Collaborate with Stantec process team members, other engineering disciplines, project managers, clients, vendors, construction personnel, operations representatives, and other stakeholders to deliver coordinated, practical, and high-quality engineering solutions.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Working technical knowledge of process engineering design in one or more of the following areas:  SAGD, Gas Processing, Mineable Oil Sands, Refining, Conventional Oil and Gas
  • Experience with energy transition and low-carbon projects would be considered an asset.
  • Advanced working knowledge of Aspen Hysys is required.  Familiarity with Hysys Dynamics, Aspen Plus, Aspen Flare Analyzer, ProMax, Symmetry/VMGSim, AFT Fathom, AFT Impulse or similar tools is an asset.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of applicable codes, standards, regulations and design guidelines (including: API standards, ASME requirements, AER directives, etc.).
  • Strong experience with the development, interpretation, and checking of PFDs, P&IDs and other process deliverables. Ability to read piping isometrics and piping plans is required.
  • Experience with electronic review and markup tools such as Bluebeam, as well as document management and interdisciplinary review workflows, would be an asset.
  • Solid understanding of the project life cycle and experience supporting project stages from concept selection, feasibility, and FEED through detailed engineering, procurement support, construction support, commissioning, start-up, and operational troubleshooting.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.  Strong interpersonal and stakeholder management skills.
  • Effective team contributor who can collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and work independently with appropriate guidance, prioritization, and technical direction.
  • Self-motivated, eager to learn, receptive to feedback, committed to professional growth, and accountable for producing accurate, complete, and well-documented work.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or equivalent discipline.
  • Minimum of 4-7 years of progressive process engineering experience is required.
  • Relevant experience includes consulting, owner-operator, EPC, industrial or energy sector environments. 
  • Registered, or eligible for registration, with APEGA as a P.Eng. is required, registration in other jurisdictions is an asset.

As a member of the team, an in-office presence will be required. Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements, including inclement weather.

Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
