We are facing an exciting future with considerable growth and demanding changes, as we deliver advanced technologies and mission critical solutions for the defense and aerospace industry. Our systems provide security for people on land, at sea and in the air. Therefore, we are looking for a Student Worker to become part of this journey and contribute to our overall purpose – securing people through advanced technology.

Your role in our team

We are looking for a student worker to join one of our Research and Development teams. Our R&D organization spans several of Terma's domains, where we develop advanced software that contributes to keeping people safe.

As a Student Worker in the Research & Development Department, you will gain hands-on experience by working on a variety of tasks, allowing you to put your theoretical knowledge into practice. In this role, you will contribute to the development and maintenance of Java-based backend systems as part of an experienced development team. You will collaborate closely with skilled engineers and take part in the team’s day-to-day work, including implementing and refining backend components, writing units, components, and integration tests, and helping identify and resolve issues as well as improve system performance.
You will take part in code reviews and technical discussions, gaining insight into architectural decisions and structured development practices. Additionally, you will contribute to documentation and help maintain a high standard of code quality within a professional development environment.

You will be part of a professional team that values collaboration, open communication, and mutual support. In this environment, you will gain hands-on experience with tools and technologies such as Git, Linux, Docker, Jenkins, and modern Java frameworks, while developing an understanding of how robust and maintainable systems are built in practice. This role gives you the opportunity to learn from experienced colleagues, develop practical skills, and contribute to meaningful projects that make a real impact in the defense and aerospace industry.

The practicalities: Working hours are around 15 hours per week, depending on task load and priorities. Working hours are flexible and will be adapted to fit your academic schedule, as we understand that your education remains your top priority.

How you will make a meaningful contribution

As a Student Worker your key responsibilities include:

    • Implementing and refining backend components in Java
    • Writing unit, component and integration tests
    • Participating in code reviews and technical discussions
    • Supporting bug fixing and performance improvements
    • Contributing to documentation in a structured development environment

Bring your world class expertise into play

We welcome students from diverse academic backgrounds who are passionate about contributing to a high-tech company and making an impact. Candidates may be pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in fields such as:

    • Software Development

    • Are motivated by understanding how systems work and a desire to understand underlying mechanisms
    • Value structure, clarity and thoughtful design decisions
    • Communicate clearly in English, both written and spoken

As a person, you are organized, proactive, and curious, with a positive, can-do attitude. You enjoy learning, can work independently, and collaborate well with others. You pay attention to detail, think critically, and are eager to take on new challenges while developing your skills.

We are an international company representing world-class expertise, delivering complex and high-tech products. We value our colleagues and our meaningful contributions to securing people through advanced technology. You will also experience that we have a strong focus on your development, teaching you useful new competences and further strengthening current ones, both professionally and personally.
