Job description

About the Role

Netsmart is seeking a Lead Software Architect, Cloud & AI Modernization to support architecture direction for CareDimensions. This role is designed for a hands-on architecture leader who can help bridge current-state application complexity with cloud-enabled, scalable, and AI-aware future-state solutions.
The ideal candidate has deep software development credibility and can partner directly with engineering teams while also influencing across Product, DevOps, Cloud, Security, Compliance, and business stakeholders. This person should be comfortable in a matrixed organization, able to understand legacy applications, and capable of guiding pragmatic modernization in AWS-supported environments.
This is an onsite role in Overland Park, KS, and candidates must live in or relocate to the Greater Kansas City metro area.

What You’ll Do
• Lead application architecture guidance for CareDimensions products and engineering teams.
• Assess current-state systems and help define practical modernization paths that improve scalability, maintainability, reliability, and cloud readiness.
• Partner with engineering teams on architecture decisions, design reviews, code reviews, prototypes, and reference implementations.
• Collaborate with DevOps and cloud infrastructure partners to improve CI/CD, deployment patterns, monitoring, observability, reliability, and operational support.
• Guide architecture across AWS, distributed systems, APIs, application integrations, data flows, and secure cloud-enabled design.
• Help teams modernize legacy components through modular design, APIs, domain-driven patterns, service boundaries, and technical debt reduction.
• Identify opportunities for AI, automation, analytics, or data-driven capabilities that could enhance product value, user experience, or operating efficiency.
• Produce clear architecture documentation, decision logs, diagrams, and reusable patterns.
• Communicate technical tradeoffs clearly to engineering, product, business, and executive stakeholders.
• Work cross-functionally across Netsmart’s matrixed organization to ensure architecture direction aligns with business priorities, client needs, and engineering execution.

What You’ll Bring

  • Strong software engineering background with experience as a Software Architect, Lead Engineer, Technical Lead, Senior Architect, or similar role.
  • Hands-on experience with enterprise-scale application development and modernization.
  • Experience working with legacy applications and helping teams evolve them toward more scalable, cloud-enabled architecture.
  • Strong understanding of AWS, cloud-native patterns, distributed systems, APIs, microservices or modular architecture, CI/CD, observability, and DevOps practices.
  • Experience in one or more relevant development ecosystems such as Java, .NET, C#, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, or similar enterprise technologies.
  • Ability to earn credibility with engineers by connecting architecture direction to real development and operational realities.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to influence without direct authority in a matrixed environment.
  • Interest in AI, machine learning, automation, or data-driven product capabilities, with a practical view of how to bring those capabilities into production responsibly.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Must be onsite in Overland Park, KS.

Preferred Experience

  • Healthcare technology, EHR, clinical workflow, human services, post-acute, care management, or regulated industry experience.
  • Experience modernizing complex enterprise applications in AWS.
  • Experience with Kubernetes, infrastructure-as-code, event-driven systems, DevOps, or platform engineering.
  • Exposure to AI/ML, LLMs, MLOps, responsible AI, or intelligent automation within enterprise software.
  • Experience partnering with Product and Engineering to translate client or market needs into technical architecture.

What Success Looks Like

Success in this role means you help CareDimensions engineering teams move from current-state complexity toward clearer, more scalable, cloud-enabled architecture. You provide hands-on technical credibility, thoughtful modernization guidance, and practical AI-aware thinking while helping teams deliver secure, reliable, and meaningful healthcare technology.
