  • Full-time appointment on a fixed term basis for 18 months.

  • Base salary range: Level B, $122,876 – $145,404 p.a. (pro-rata) plus 17% superannuation.

About the area

In this role you will work within the School of Physics, Mathematics and Computing at UWA.  This role is also jointly connected to the Pawsey Supercomputing Research Centre, Australia's premier high-performance computing and data research infrastructure facility.

Pawsey supports national and international research through advanced computing technologies and is at the forefront of developing hybrid supercomputing and quantum computing capabilities. Through a recent Australian Government NCRIS investment, Pawsey is expanding its leadership in next-generation computing technologies and applications.

About the opportunity

In this role you will undertake independent and collaborative research, contribute to high-quality teaching and student supervision, and help advance the development of hybrid classical-quantum computing methodologies. You will work closely with researchers across UWA and Pawsey to develop innovative solutions that leverage both supercomputing and quantum technologies.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting internationally recognised research in quantum computing, quantum algorithms and related computational methods.

  • Developing scalable hybrid classical-quantum approaches for future exascale computing environments.

  • Publishing high-quality research outputs in leading peer-reviewed journals and presenting at national and international conferences.

  • Contributing to competitive research funding applications and building industry, government and academic partnerships.

  • Delivering engaging undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, unit coordination and curriculum development.

  • Supervising Honours, Masters and PhD students and supporting the growth of the next generation of researchers.

  • Providing specialist advice and training to researchers and users of advanced computing technologies through Pawsey.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate:

  • A PhD in quantum computing, physics, scientific computing or a closely related discipline.

  • A strong research track record relative to opportunity, including publications in high-quality peer-reviewed journals and demonstrated expertise in quantum algorithms.

  • Evidence of innovative and inclusive teaching practice and a commitment to delivering an outstanding student experience.

  • Experience or potential in securing competitive research funding and developing collaborative research partnerships.

  • Strong interpersonal, communication and organisational skills, with the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams

Desirable experience

We would also welcome candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Quantum computing frameworks such as Qiskit, PennyLane or OpenQASM.

  • Programming languages including Python, C/C++, Fortran, Julia or Rust.

  • High-performance computing, scientific modelling, distributed computing and GPU-based architectures.

  • Parallel programming technologies such as MPI, OpenMP, CUDA or HIP.

  • Quantum applications in chemistry, health, scientific simulation or related domains.

Note: Employment checks will include information on gender-based violence, sexual harassment, and related misconduct to meet legal obligations.
