Job description

Summary

Serves as a Cartographic Specialist responsible for developing, producing, and maintaining aeronautical charts, maps, graphs, and visual aids that support the safety and efficiency of the National Airspace System (NAS).

Duties

  • Incumbent applies experience and advanced knowledge of cartographic processes and procedures including: collecting, evaluating, verifying and selecting information; preparing, developing, constructing, and producing radar, video, aeronautical and other types of charts and visual aids based on accrued information. Prepares statistical graphs and pictorial illustrations for use by operational, support, and administrative personnel. Performs multiple and varying tasks associated with the cartographic process, which requires expertise in the collection, evaluation, selection and verification of information and the knowledge and skills to originate from the data; accurate aeronautical and special purpose charts, maps, graphs, and pictorial illustrations. Develops methods to meet cartographic requirements using computer mapping technology, drawing upon traditional manual cartographic experience and techniques. Cartographic requirements include, but are not limited to, design and creation of charts and maps depicting navigational aids and hazards; Minimum Instrument Flight Rules (IFR)/Altitudes (MIA); fixes; airports; warning areas; compulsory and non-compulsory reporting points; obstructions; military operational areas; boundaries for airspace stratifications; Center boundaries; Approach Control boundaries variances; operational deviations; and all annotations thereof. Contacts typically are internal and external. Internal contacts frequently involve more than one major subdivision or LOB/staff office and are with managers and other employees to share information, coordinate efforts, discuss the statuses of assignments, and identify resources needed to complete assignments. External contacts typically are with customers and other parties concerning information or technical findings related to assignments. Established policies and procedures provide guidance for most assignments but allow considerable discretion for employee to select the most appropriate approach(es) or recommend new approaches. Typically works under limited instructions that are provided by a manager, project/program manager, team leader, or more experienced employee. Work is reviewed periodically, typically through status reports and at completion, to ensure policy compliance and alignment with the requirements of projects and/or work activities.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position you must demonstrate in your application that you possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to FV-H, FG/GS-12 level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. Specialized experience may include but is not limited to: Experience in performing management studies and conducting program analysis, making recommendations based on the analysis of statistical and other data; tracking and monitoring program trends; preparing briefing materials, reports and documents; prioritizing job tasks. Qualifications must be met by the closing date of the announcement.
