Job Summary

The Material Handler & Shipping Coordinator supports efficient shop operations by moving, organizing, and staging raw materials, work-in-process, packaging supplies, and finished products. Working with fabrication, painting, and shipping teams, this role ensures materials are available when needed and completed products are packaged and shipped on time. Responsibilities include safely operating forklifts, cranes, and other handling equipment; coordinating material flow; assisting with packaging and truck loading; maintaining organized staging areas; and protecting materials from damage. The ideal candidate is organized, safety-focused, and effective in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities

Material Flow, Production & Finishing Support

  • Move and stage steel, components, fixtures, and work-in-process materials throughout the shop based on production and shipping priorities.
  • Supply fabrication, machining, painting, assembly, and shipping teams with required materials and handling supplies.
  • Move fabricated components to painting and transfer finished parts to designated staging areas while protecting surfaces from damage.
  • Maintain organized staging areas, coordinate completed product movement, and promptly communicate material shortages or delays.

Packaging & Shipping Preparation

  • Maintain packaging supplies, including banding, blocking, skids, pallets, dunnage, and protective materials.
  • Package and secure completed products according to company and customer requirements.
  • Group, verify, and stage shipments by job, customer, or delivery.
  • Assist with truck loading and unloading and communicate shipment status or material concerns to the shop manager.

Equipment & Material Handling

  • Inspect and safely operate forklifts, overhead cranes, and other material-handling equipment.
  • Follow load limits and remain alert to pedestrians, overhead hazards, and shop conditions.
  • Immediately report equipment damage, unsafe conditions, or material-handling concerns.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of material handling and shipping experience in a manufacturing, steel fabrication, warehouse, or industrial environment.
  • Forklift experience required.
  • Overhead crane experience preferred.
  • Ability to safely move large, heavy, and irregularly shaped steel components.
  • Ability to read basic work orders, job numbers, labels, and shipping documentation.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize work based on production and shipping requirements.
  • Strong commitment to safety and housekeeping.
  • Ability to work in varying temperatures and shop conditions.
