Job description

Mid-Level Software Developer - Android & Backend

Location: Hybrid, UK-based, with a preference for candidates who can commute to our Wakefield, West Yorkshire HQ when required
Contract: Full-time
Salary: £40,000 - £50,000 per annum
Department: Engineering

About Boxbar Tech

Boxbar Tech is an award-winning, high-growth technology company transforming the way drinks are served across stadiums, arenas, festivals, events and hospitality venues around the world.

Our automated self-service drinks technology helps our partners serve customers faster, reduce queues, improve drink quality and increase operational efficiency. Behind the physical hardware is a growing technology platform combining Android applications, cloud services, payment integrations, management software and real-time data.

We design, build, deploy and support our technology in live environments where performance and reliability genuinely matter.

As Boxbar continues to scale, we are looking for a Mid-Level Software Developer who enjoys solving real-world problems, working across a varied technology stack and taking ownership of features from initial design through to deployment.

The Opportunity

You will join a small, collaborative engineering team working across several products and technologies.

No two weeks will be the same. You could be developing new features for our Android kiosk application, building backend services, integrating a new payment provider or investigating an issue involving hardware, software and networking.

This is an excellent opportunity for a developer who enjoys broad technical challenges and wants the freedom to contribute ideas, influence technical decisions and see their work operating in major venues and events around the world.

You will work closely with colleagues across Engineering, Product, Operations and Client Success to turn commercial and operational requirements into reliable, maintainable software.

What You’ll Be Doing

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Developing new features for our Android kiosk application

  • Building and maintaining backend services and REST APIs

  • Integrating third-party payment providers and external platforms

  • Working with cloud infrastructure and serverless technologies

  • Supporting integrations between software, payment devices and physical hardware

  • Investigating and resolving issues across applications, devices, hardware and networks

  • Improving application performance, stability and reliability

  • Contributing to architecture and technical design discussions

  • Writing clean, testable and maintainable code

  • Reviewing code and helping maintain high engineering standards

  • Supporting deployment, monitoring and continuous improvement

  • Working closely with Product and Operations teams to deliver new functionality

  • Taking ownership of features from initial concept through to production

What You’ll Work On

Projects may include:

  • Android kiosk software

  • Cloud APIs and backend systems

  • AI-assisted data analysis and internal insight tools

  • Real-time data processing

  • Payment-provider integrations

  • Hardware and peripheral integrations

  • Remote device management

  • Internal operational tooling

  • Application performance and reliability improvements

About You

We are looking for someone who:

  • Enjoys learning and working with new technologies

  • Takes ownership and follows work through to completion

  • Approaches problems pragmatically

  • Writes clean, maintainable code

  • Is comfortable working independently while collaborating with a wider team

  • Communicates technical information clearly

  • Enjoys investigating complex problems rather than working within a narrow remit

  • Can balance speed of delivery with quality and reliability

  • Is comfortable in a fast-moving scale-up environment

  • Wants to contribute ideas rather than simply implement specifications

Essential Skills and Experience

You will have experience in most of the following:

  • Approximately three to five years of commercial software-development experience

  • Strong Java and/or Kotlin development skills

  • Commercial Android application development

  • Building or consuming REST APIs

  • Working with SQL databases

  • Git and collaborative source-control workflows

  • Object-oriented programming principles

  • Debugging complex software issues

  • Writing clear, structured and maintainable code

  • Managing your own workload and priorities

  • Communicating effectively with both technical and non-technical colleagues

You do not need to have experience with every technology listed. Strong software engineering fundamentals, curiosity, and a willingness to learn are more important than matching the entire stack.

Desirable Experience

Experience in any of the following would be beneficial:

  • AWS

  • Serverless development using AWS Lambda or API Gateway

  • PostgreSQL

  • Firebase

  • Docker

  • Linux

  • Python

  • Node.js

  • Networking fundamentals

  • Payment integrations

  • Bluetooth, USB or serial communications

  • Embedded systems or IoT devices

  • CI/CD pipelines

  • GitHub Actions

  • Applications interacting with physical hardware

  • Remote monitoring or device-management platforms

Our Current Technology Stack

Our current technology stack includes:

  • Kotlin and Java

  • Android

  • AWS

  • PostgreSQL

  • Firebase

  • Docker

  • REST APIs

  • GitHub Actions

The stack will continue to evolve as the business and our products grow.

Why Join Boxbar?

  • Work on technology used in major stadiums, festivals, arenas and hospitality environments

  • See the direct, real-world impact of the software you build

  • Take ownership of meaningful features and technical challenges

  • Work across Android, backend, cloud, payments, data and hardware integrations

  • Join a small team where your ideas and contributions will be visible

  • Help shape engineering practices as the business scales

  • Join an ambitious international technology company at an exciting stage of growth

Interview Process

1. Initial conversation with me on motivation, experience, communication and logistics
2. Technical assessment around Android, backend, debugging and engineering judgement
3. Final interview confirming ownership, collaboration and real-world problem-solving approach

Equality and Inclusion

Boxbar Tech is committed to creating an inclusive working environment and providing equal opportunities to all applicants.

We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds and make employment decisions based on skills, experience, potential and suitability for the role. Please let us know should you require any reasonable adjustments during the recruitment process.
