PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

The Multi-Skilled Technical Operator enables the delivery of BBC journalism across television, radio, digital and social platforms by combining expertise in video production, live streaming, broadcast operations and production technology support. Working as part of a wider technical production team, the post holder ensures content is delivered efficiently, creatively and to the highest editorial and technical standards while adapting to evolving production technologies and workflows.

The post holder will support video-led storytelling and digital-first production while maintaining professional broadcast standards. You will also provide first-line operational support for production systems and users, escalating specialist technical issues where appropriate.

WHY JOIN THE TEAM
This role suits a skilled technical operator confident in a digital studio environment. You’ll work across studio operations, including sound mixing, vision mixing, lighting, camera work, video editing, and live streaming. With training, you’ll support all technical production areas. Your expertise will be key to delivering high-quality content and ensuring smooth operations in a fast-paced, live, collaborative setting.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:
• Manage day-to-day operations of a digital video production studio, including layout, maintenance, and safety.
• Support editorial teams in creating engaging content for social media and streaming platforms.
• Operate software-based vision mixing tools and apply keying techniques to enhance visual output.
• Mix live and recorded audio, set up microphones, and manage sound equipment to meet production needs.
• Rig, test, and operate studio lighting, cameras (including PTZ), monitors, and prompting devices.
• Coordinate technical issues with local and remote teams to ensure timely resolution and smooth production.
• Develop additional technical competencies through training and operational experience, contributing to a flexible and resilient technical production team.
• Provide basic IT support and act as “smart hands” for remote engineering tasks, including equipment setup and troubleshooting.

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
• Proven experience supporting live television, radio or digital production in a broadcast or multimedia environment.
• Experience operating live production and streaming platforms such as vMix (or equivalent).
• Skilled in sound mixing, microphone setup, and use of radio mics, with awareness of licensing and frequency allocation.
• Competent in studio lighting setup and camera operations, including PTZ and lightweight cameras.
• Excellent English communication skills, both written and spoken, with strong interpersonal abilities.
• Editorial awareness and understanding of BBC News priorities, with the ability to work accurately under pressure.
• Demonstrable experience in video acquisition and non-linear editing for broadcast or digital platforms.
• IT knowledge and ability to operate technical equipment, including software-based broadcast systems and network configuration.
• Awareness of health, safety, and security in studio environments, with required levels of hearing and colour vision.

If you can demonstrate some of these skills and experience, together with transferable strengths and a willingness to learn, we'd love to hear from you.
