Job description

About the Department

This position focuses on the assistance of students in their skills practice and simulation experiences while overseeing activities in the lab. The responsibilities require personal initiative, with the indirect supervision of the Associate Dean of Nursing in collaboration with the Simulation Educator and the Clinical Liaison. In this role, he/she will coordinate, collaborate, and communicate with nursing faculty, and keep his/her own nursing skills and knowledge current with respect to best practices in nursing lab and simulation in nursing education. 

Position Duties

Simulation & Clinical Reasoning Preparation
1. Liaises with the Assoc. Dean, Sim Ed, & Clin. Liaison, to assist with the facilitation of simulation and skills activities according to course objectives. 
2. Assist faculty in the development and delivery of lab simulations and exercises to demonstrate patient care and other related skills. 
3.Assists with in-house training and support for simulation development and faculty proficiency targets. 
3. Prepares lab setting for student skills validation activities, in collaboration with course faculty. 
4. Maintains student records as required and pre/post sim data.
5. Provides individual assistance to students in an open lab.

Oversight:

  1. Maintains a clean, orderly lab environment. 
  2. Helps with the setup of equipment/supplies needed for labs taught by faculty, using Lab Guide and creativity. 
  3. Oversight of equipment/supply returns to appropriate storage areas; maintains organized storage room. 
  4. Participate in meetings for the preparation of lab schedules. 
  5. Ensure that Astra room assignments are submitted for student/conference/workshop and testing activities. Book special event needs: Blessing of the Hands, Pinning, STTI, etc.
  6. Oversees inventory of supplies each semester and makes purchase list recommendations across the academic year. 
  7. Uniform ordering instructions for students with DOVE rep for uniforms and supplies.
  8. Orders equipment and supplies with School Assoc. Dean/ Sim Ed/ Clin. Liaison approval.
  9. Maintains record of equipment/supplies received, verifying receipt for Accounts Payable as necessary.

  11. Manage equipment maintenance and classroom technology in cooperation with Maintenance / IT Departments. Track service contracts with equipment suppliers.
  12. Implement safety standards in the use of all equipment/supplies to protect students/faculty from potential injury or harm while working with hazardous materials (needles, syringes, etc.). 
  13. Implement Universal Precautions and ensure that personal protective equipment and sharps containers are readily available. 
  14. Clean surfaces with approved disinfectant in the unlikely event of possible contamination with blood or body fluids. 
  15. Arrange for laundering of linen. 
  16. Maintain compliance with Pharmacy License standards: inventory, reporting, and posting of the current license. 
  17. Evaluate media for purchase recommendations. 
  18. Orient & instruct students, regarding: the safe, effective use of lab equipment and time. 
  19. Collates pre- and post-activity records, and compiles report data on lab/skills utilization.
  20. Maintain records on the utilization of the lab. 
  21. Maintain records on equipment/supplies signed out of the lab and liaise with vendors. 
  22. Liaison with the EU visit coordinator in the admissions office for prospective student visits.
Other Collaborative Involvement:
  • Liaise with the Assoc. Dean, the Simulation Educator, and Clinical Liaison on the development of initiatives that support the work of the SON.
  • Prepare updates for faculty meetings, reports on simulation and lab usage, and visitor numbers.
  • Participate in meetings as needed. Attend semi-annual Clinical Instructor Workshop / Orientation.
  • Keep the “wall TV” notice board updated regularly.
  • Institutional support regarding marketing and admissions networking as requested (E.g., video creation, day of giving outreach, etc.)
  • Participate in the Safety Committee and ensure that protocols and handbooks remain current. 
  • Ensure that testing schedules are confirmed through the electronic booking system, confirm details with faculty, and assist with proctoring prn.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.
Current unencumbered Pennsylvania RN licensure with 2 years clinical experience.
Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator® (CHSE®) or Operations Specialist® (CHSOS®) (will train if needed).
Proficient with computer technology and basic office software (E.g., MSWord, Excel).
Ability to communicate effectively with faculty and students. 

Other Qualifications

This is an active job. May be required to handle moderately heavy equipment and/or mannequins.

Part-time staff who are scheduled to work less than 30 hours per week schedule are eligible for employer contribution towards the retirement plan after one year of employment. Eligibility rules apply. Adjunct faculty may make employee deferral contributions towards the retirement plan.
 
Part-Time Graduate Assistant Coaches are eligible for participation in the Tuition Remission Coaches Program.
