Veeco is seeking a motivated Process Development Engineer to support process development, customer demonstrations, and application qualification activities for Veeco’s ion beam deposition systems. The successful candidate will work closely with customers, product management, engineering, and field teams to develop, optimize, and validate thin-film deposition processes that support customer manufacturing requirements and business growth.

The role combines hands-on and execution-oriented, with an emphasis on laboratory process work, technical documentation, troubleshooting, and support for customer evaluations. The Process Development Engineer will help develop and validate thin-film deposition processes for optical, semiconductor, and photonics applications while building expertise in Veeco systems and customer requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Execute thin-film deposition experiments using Veeco ion beam deposition systems.
  • Support process development, optimization, and characterization activities under technical guidance.
  • Collect, analyze, and summarize process data to support customer evaluations and internal development work.
  • Prepare technical reports, test summaries, procedures, and process documentation.
  • Assist with customer demonstrations, process evaluations, and proof-of-concept activities.
  • Work with applications, engineering, product management, and field teams to support new product introductions and customer qualification and adoption activities.
  • Troubleshoot process and equipment-related issues and help identify practical corrective actions.
  • Support process transfer, customer training, and occasional onsite technical activities.
  • Maintain familiarity with system hardware, diagnostics, and process interactions to support effective lab execution.
  • Support day-to-day operation, maintenance coordination, and uptime of sputtering systems at Veeco’s R&D location.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, Chemistry, or a related technical field with 5+ years of experience, or a Master’s degree in a related technical field with 3+ years of experience, in thin-film deposition, semiconductor processing, optical coatings, photonics manufacturing, or related technologies.
  • Hands-on experience with vacuum systems, thin-film deposition, process development, materials characterization, or semiconductor/optical manufacturing is preferred.
Ability to execute experiments, analyze data, document results, and communicate technical findings clearly.
  • Experience working in a laboratory, manufacturing, applications engineering, process engineering, or related technical environment.
  • Willingness and ability to travel approximately 10–20% domestically and internationally for customer visits, conferences, and qualification support activities.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong understanding of thin-film deposition processes, vacuum systems, optical coatings, or semiconductor manufacturing technologies.
  • Experience with process characterization, statistical analysis, DOE methodologies, and process optimization techniques.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills involving both process performance and equipment operation.
  • Ability to translate customer requirements into practical process solutions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present technical information to customers, management, and engineering teams.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Self-motivated, collaborative, and capable of working independently in a laboratory and customer-facing environment.
Experience with photonics, optical communications, semiconductor devices, or advanced materials applications is preferred.
