Job description

ROLE OVERVIEW

Nscale is seeking a Project Engineer to serve as the onsite technical representative responsible for managing construction contractor performance throughout project execution. Based full-time at the construction site, this role serves as the primary point of contact between Nscale and construction contractors, ensuring work is performed in accordance with design specifications, contract requirements, project schedules, and established safety and quality standards.

Working closely with the Project Manager and Construction Manager, the Project Engineer is responsible for overseeing day-to-day contractor activities, resolving field issues in real time, and holding contractors accountable for scope, schedule, cost, and quality throughout the construction lifecycle.

CONTRACTOR MANAGEMENT & FIELD OVERSIGHT

– Serve as the day-to-day onsite point of contact between the company and construction contractor(s), including subcontractors

– Monitor and enforce contractor compliance with contract documents, drawings, specifications, and approved schedules

– Review and track contractor daily and weekly progress reports, manpower logs, and productivity against the baseline schedule, escalating schedule slippage promptly

– Conduct daily site walks and inspections to verify installed work meets design intent, quality standards, and applicable codes before sign-off

– Hold contractors accountable to housekeeping, environmental, and site logistics requirements

CONTRACT ADMINISTRATION

– Review, log, and manage Requests for Information (RFIs), submittals, and shop drawings, driving timely responses to avoid contractor delays

– Evaluate and process contractor change order requests and back-charges, assessing validity, cost impact, and schedule impact before recommending approval

– Verify contractor quantities and progress for pay applications and invoicing, reconciling against field-verified completion

QUALITY, SAFETY & COMPLIANCE

– Enforce site safety requirements, confirming contractor adherence to the site safety plan, required permits (including hot work, confined space, and excavation), and applicable OSHA and regulatory standards

– Support quality control and quality assurance (QC/QA) inspections and witness testing, commissioning, and start-up activities as required

– Maintain thorough field documentation, including daily reports, site photos, non-conformance reports (NCRs), punch lists, and inspection records

– Track and manage the project punch list through contractor close-out, ensuring deficiencies are corrected before acceptance

COORDINATION & ISSUE RESOLUTION

– Lead or participate in daily and weekly contractor coordination meetings, documenting action items and following them through to completion

– Identify field conflicts, constructability issues, and design discrepancies, coordinating resolution with design engineers and the Project Manager

QUALIFICATIONS

– Bachelor's degree in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, or a related Engineering discipline, or equivalent field experience

– 3–5 years of experience in construction project engineering, field engineering, or contractor/construction management

– Demonstrated experience managing or overseeing construction contractors in an onsite field environment

– Strong understanding of construction methods, sequencing, and contract administration, including RFIs, submittals, change orders, and pay applications

– Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents

– Working knowledge of applicable building codes and OSHA safety standards

– Proficiency with project management and documentation tools such as MS Project, Procore, Bluebeam, and AutoCAD

– Strong communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to hold contractors accountable in real time

– Ability to work full-time onsite in an active construction environment

Preferred Qualifications

– Professional Engineer (PE) license or Engineer in Training (EIT) certification

– OSHA 30-Hour Certification

– Experience administering contracts under standard forms such as AIA, EPC, EPCM, or similar

– Experience with cost and quantity reconciliation and pay application review

– Experience in an industry-specific area such as industrial, oil & gas, heavy civil, infrastructure, or other applicable sectors

WORK ENVIRONMENT

– Full-time, active construction site (not a hybrid or office-based role)

– Exposure to outdoor weather conditions, noise, dust, and heavy equipment or vehicle traffic

– Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times while in active work areas

– May require early morning start times to align with contractor work hours

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

– Ability to walk uneven job site terrain for extended periods and climb stairs, ladders, and scaffolding

– Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and temperature conditions

– Ability to wear required PPE, including hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toe boots, and high-visibility clothing

– Ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 25 pounds, including tools, plans, and equipment
