Job description

About Constellation

Constellation is an independent research center that brings together people throughout the AI safety ecosystem to accelerate insight, research, and talent through better cooperation. Unlike a conference or summit, Constellation operates continuously, in the form of a physical workspace as well as conference-style talks, workshops, and training bootcamps. Continuous operation allows for relationships and conversations to develop over time, meaningfully fostering trust, collaboration, and shared insight. It also makes Constellation a natural field-building hub by rapidly inspiring, orienting, and connecting people who are newer to the field.

Based in Berkeley, CA, our shared workspace hosts over 200 people per week across dozens of AI safety organizations in nonprofits, academia, industry, and government. Hundreds of other researchers spend time at Constellation for shorter visits each year. We believe this is the strongest and highest-output network of AI safety researchers in the world; dozens of participants in past Constellation programs have gone on to safety-focused roles at companies such as METR, Redwood Research, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, OpenAI, and the US and UK Safety Institutes.

About the role

As a Program Coordinator on the Research Programs Team, you will play a critical role focused on maintaining and improving the systems we use to run our research programs. You’ll work across the entire pipeline for our fellowships, including sourcing and applications, weekly programming and events, onboarding and offboarding Fellows, and coordinating with our mobilization and operations teams. You’ll report to the Manager of Research Programs and work closely with the program managers across the team, ensuring our research programs stay on track.

This role is perfect for someone who cares deeply about our mission to grow the AI safety field, feels excited about program delivery, and brings strong operational instincts to a fast-moving team. This role is also designed to support growth into research management and broader program management responsibilities. You don't need to be a researcher yourself; we’re looking for sharp judgment, curiosity about the work, and a willingness to learn.

Key responsibilities

Program Operations

  • Maintain project plans and documentation, ensuring the team has an accurate view into each program
  • Support collaboration among research fellows and their mentors, finding ways to broaden their network and connect to the wider AI Safety ecosystem
  • Collect and analyze feedback from fellows, mentors, and other stakeholders to inform ongoing program development
  • Contribute to event design and execution, including technical workshops for AI researchers and educational sessions for policymakers, and provide an excellent attendee experience

Team Operations and Coordination

  • Design, execute quickly, and iterate on improvements to team processes, prioritizing the most important and urgent work
  • Serve as a reliable point of coordination across the team, catching things before they fall through the cracks

Skills & experience

You might be a good fit if:

  • You think AI might have transformative effects in the coming years, and want to support the people working on ensuring it goes well
  • You have strong project management instincts—you consistently track tasks and follow up on loose ends, even while managing multiple projects or priorities
  • You're highly organized and energized by keeping systems running smoothly and documentation up to date
  • You’re motivated to make improvements to processes, not just execute on the status quo
  • You have strong communication skills (written and verbal) and can build trust across different audiences, e.g. researchers, executives, and policymakers
  • You're a quick learner who can engage with complex topics
  • Bonus: You have experience in program coordination, project management, research operations, event planning, or related fields

Compensation & Benefits

The base pay range for this role is $105,000 – $133,000 per year.

Our benefits are hard to beat! They include:
  • Healthy lunches and dinners catered by our amazing kitchen team
  • Unlimited snacks & drinks
  • Generous vacation policy
  • 401(k) with employer match
  • Employer-paid commuter benefits
  • High-quality health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Friendly and supportive team
  • Regular interaction with AI safety researchers and thought leaders

Additional Information

This is a full time, on-site role. Our Berkeley office is a few steps from the nearest BART (metro) and bus stop. On-site parking is also available.

The ideal candidate for this role will have some combination of the skills and experiences described above. If you are not sure if you are qualified, we strongly encourage you to apply anyway. Beyond the qualifications outlined, our priority is building a team that will help humanity safely navigate the development of transformative AI. If you would be excited to do this work, we’d love to consider you.

We value diversity in all respects and base our hiring decisions on the needs of the organization and individual qualifications. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds, regardless of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, age or disability.

How to Apply

Submit your resume and answer the application questions. We may use AI to assist in the initial screening of applications, including to detect whether candidates have used AI models in drafting their application. Final hiring decisions are always made by a human in our team.
