Senior Java Developer (AWS Cloud, ML Platform)

We are expanding our Budapest engineering hub and seeking a Senior Java Developer with strong AWS experience to help integrate three internally built products, each with its own tech stack, into a scalable, modern, cloud-native platform. This role is key to enabling X-Chem to fully leverage our data assets and advanced AI tools in support of next-generation scientific workflows.
Hybrid role with flexible working hours, based in a modern and inspiring workspace at Graphisoft Park in Budapest’s 3rd district.
What You’ll Do
- Develop and enhance cloud-native backend services using modern frameworks to support scalable scientific and AI workflows.
- Integrate three existing in-house products built on different technology stacks into a unified, cohesive platform that improves interoperability and data flow.
- Modernize targeted legacy components where appropriate, refactoring or rebuilding selected parts to align with current best practices and cloud standards.
- Design and implement microservices and APIs that connect new and existing systems across chemistry, analytics, production, and logistics workflows.
- Work within event-driven and AWS-native architectures (EKS, S3, Lambda, containers) to support robust and efficient system interactions.
- Integrate machine learning models and data pipelines into production environments.
- Bridge older and newer technology stacks (Java, Python, C#, JSF, HTML, React), ensuring smooth transitions and consistent user experiences.
- Lead architectural planning and platform strategy discussions, helping determine when to extend, integrate, or modernize components.
- Improve performance, reliability, and maintainability of both existing systems and newly developed services.
- Work closely with cross-functional scientific teams to translate domain requirements into scalable cloud-based solutions.
What We’re Looking For
- Solid professional experience with Java development and backend engineering.
- Hands-on experience with AWS cloud, Docker, Kubernetes/EKS, and microservices.
- Familiarity with databases such as MongoDB, PostgreSQL, or Oracle.
- Experience integrating complex systems in multi-language environments.
- Strong problem-solving mindset and interest in scientific or data-intensive domains.
Nice to Have
- Python experience, especially related to AI/ML or data workflows.
- Familiarity with front-end technologies (e.g., React or JSF) or an interest in understanding UI integration.
- Knowledge of C# or experience merging diverse tech stacks.
- Exposure to machine learning platforms.
- Experience with CI/CD tools.
- Experience with chemistry, cheminformatics, DEL technology, or drug discovery workflows a strong bonus.
