Job description

Location: Calgary, AB
Permanent Full-Time
Apply: Geologic Career Centre

Geologic is a trusted data, software, and information solutions company committed to the Energy Industry. Every day we provide global customers with market-leading data, software, platforms, analytics, education, news, and insights that enable them to make vital decisions that drive growth and efficiency. Based in Calgary, with offices in London (UK) and Houston (US), we deliver critical data-driven intelligence ranging from surface and subsurface well and asset level information and insights to corporate performance benchmarking data and A&D transaction data.

People make us successful. We’re driven by a team of individuals whose unique backgrounds and experience allow us to provide the best products and customer service on the market. Together we’re transforming the energy intelligence landscape.

We're growing and looking for a Senior Manager, Software Development to lead a full-stack engineering team building modern, cloud-based applications. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who thrives at the intersection of people, product, and delivery. We want someone who can keep a demanding roadmap moving, grow the engineers around them, and know exactly when to pull in a senior engineer or architect to get something right.

You’ll own the health and output of your team end to end: how work is planned, how it ships, how quality holds up, and how the people on the team develop over time.

How will you spend your day?

You’ll lead a cross-functional, full-stack team spanning front-end, back-end, and everything in between, taking accountability for both what the team delivers and how it works together. Day to day, that means driving an iterative development process where the team ships in small, steady increments and improves as it goes, and owning release and project management so that timelines, dependencies, and launches are planned and predictable rather than last-minute scrambles.

Much of the job is managing in two directions at once. You’ll manage down by coaching engineers, running effective team meetings, and matching the right people to the right work through active skills management. You’ll manage up by keeping stakeholders and leadership informed through clear, well-organized status updates. When timelines get demanding, you’ll be the one who keeps the team focused, sets realistic expectations, and protects both delivery and sustainability.

You’ll also stay close enough to the technical work to have good judgment about it. That means recognizing what strong code looks like, spotting where a design decision carries real risk, and knowing when to bring in experienced developers or architects rather than letting the team learn an expensive lesson the hard way.

Ready to apply? Here's what we're looking for:

  • Proven experience managing a full-stack engineering team across all major roles (front-end, back-end, and supporting disciplines)
  • Hands-on background building modern, cloud-based applications
  • Strong track record with iterative / agile development practices
  • Solid experience in release management and project management
  • Demonstrated skills management, developing engineers and aligning strengths to the work
  • Ability to manage demanding timelines without sacrificing quality or team health
  • Skilled at organizing status updates and running productive team meetings
  • Comfortable managing up and down, communicating clearly with both leadership and the team
  • Strong technical judgment: an eye for good code and a sense for when to involve senior developers or architects

Nice to Haves:

  • Experience delivering products on AWS or another major cloud platform
  • Background in the energy sector or with geospatial, subsurface, or large-scale data products
  • Experience growing and scaling an engineering team, including hiring and developing engineers
  • Familiarity leading teams that build with AI features and modern cloud-native architectures
