Under minimal supervision, leads and assists in the resolution of complex problems and technical design gaps.  Drives improvement initiatives that support the overarching global reliability of the company's systems, including capacity planning, failover strategies, performance improvements, reduction of Mean Time to Awareness/Resolve and postmortems.  Leverages critical thinking to improve best practices and provides enterprise-level recommendations that ensure reliability and resiliency. Mentors those in less senior positions.

Additional Job Details:

  • Provides leadership and initiative in the solutions to improve the availability, scalability, latency, resiliency and efficiency across Dataworks. Responsible for improvements to end-to-end availability and performance of mission critical services and build automation to prevent problem recurrence. Leads the improvements and optimization of service conditions. 
  •  Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) is the lead operations role interfacing with existing teams comprised of multiple skill sets (Support, Development, Systems Operations) focused on operations.
  • The SRE team is the change agent who provides direction and focus to the teams through an understanding a broad skillset in software reliability engineering.   
  • The SRE team leverages automation to eliminate toil and shift operations left in the process, to help teams improve reliability by remediating issues earlier in the Software Development Lifecycle.
  • SRE team is reliant on leveraging appropriate data metrics about applications in order to focus on the appropriate priorities that deliver the most business impact.  The main goals are to create ultra-scalable and highly reliable software systems.
  • The Site Reliability Engineering team will focus on enabling both the operations teams and the development teams through the application of reliability and resiliency patterns and best practices.
  • The Site Reliability Engineer team will also collaborate with peers and the organization level Reliability Engineering and DevSecOps Enablement groups. 
  • This is a technical lead role with an emphasis on strong coaching, mentoring, and communication skills utilizing multiple forms of media to drive continuous improvement across the value stream.
  • Successful candidates will be required to develop a strong understanding of how their IT value stream supports the FedEx business, including the ability to help their business partners articulate and document system expectations and impacts.

Skills/Knowledge/Experience Considered a Plus:
  • Strong background with programming languages like Python, Ruby, Go, or JavaScript/TypeScript 
  • Multiple years of experience running and building systems in cloud environments i.e. Azure, GCP
  • Proven history supporting and maintaining a 24x7 online business 
  • Strong experience setting SLOs / SLIs and managing of reliability for infrastructure and applications
  • Proven history of toil elimination by leveraging automation
  • Strong background using tools like PagerDuty to managing incidents
  • Strong experience with monitoring and alerting systems like Prometheus, Graphana, Datadog. 
  • Experience with Linux systems engineering 
  • Experience with configuration management technologies like Chef, Ansible, Puppet, or the like 
  • Experience managing and maintaining continuous integration platforms such as Jenkins or Github Actions 

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems and/or equivalent formal training or work experience.  Five (5) or more years equivalent work experience in information technology or engineering environment.  A related advanced degree may offset the experience requirements.

This position can be domiciled anywhere in the United States.
The ability to work remotely within the United States may be available based on business need.
