Regular, Full-Time, Limited-Term (not to exceed twelve (12) months in duration from date of hire), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), Hawai‘i Institute of Geophysics and Planetology (HIGP), located in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.  

MONTHLY SALARY:  $4,500 - $5,000/Mon.  

DUTIES:  Processes Apollo and lunar meteorite samples for separation of heavy minerals. Hand-picks apatite and zircon and mounting in epoxy and metal media. Responsible for manufacturing and preparation of mounts using lathe, mill and other precision machining. Processes images of minerals via photomicrography and scanning electron microscopy. Conducts geochemical analysis of minerals via micro x-ray fluorescence and electron microprobe, and isotopic analysis via secondary ionization mass spectrometry (SIMS). Collects and organizes all data required to prepare samples for SIMS, collect isotope data and interprets results of isotope analyses. Interprets results in the context of prior findings as described in peer-reviewed literature. Prepares scientific publications and progress reports, and gives presentations at scientific meetings, to disseminate the results of the research.  

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: 
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Geological Science or related field.
EXPERIENCE: One to three (1-3) years of research experience in the field of isotope geochemistry.
KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of secondary ionization mass spectrometry for analyzing isotope ratios.
ABILITIES & SKILLS: Background in analytical geochemistry. Must possess good verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to complete the UH Title IX training within 30 days from date of hire, and re-certify annually. Must be able to complete the Workplace Violence Prevention training within 30 days from date of hire, and re-certify annually. Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire, and re-certify every twelve (12) months.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Broad experience with analytical equipment used in in situ mineral analysis for scientific investigation.
