Description
This is a high-visibility role where you'll drive the technical strategy and execution for payment experiences that span multiple surfaces, from signing up to AWS Classic or Kiro, to configuring how customer pays in different geographies, to enabling customer agentic payments. You'll work at the intersection of customer experience, security, and financial systems, solving complex problems that require balancing speed, reliability, and regulatory compliance across global markets.
What makes this role exciting:
Own systems that process billions of transactions annually and directly impact Amazon's bottom line
Lead a talented team of engineers in Vancouver, one of Amazon's fastest-growing tech hubs
Shape the future of how customers interact with payments across Amazon's ecosystem
Work on problems that blend GenAI, distributed systems, UX, and financial regulations.
Key job responsibilities
As a Software Development Manager at the Payments Experience team, you will:
- Lead, mentor, and grow a team of software development engineers (frontend and backend), fostering a culture of operational excellence and innovation
- Own the technical vision and roadmap for Payment Experience services, aligning with broader organizational goals
- Drive architecture decisions for high-availability, low-latency systems that handle massive transaction volumes
- Partner with product management, UX, and cross-functional teams to define and deliver customer-facing payment features
- Establish and maintain high operational standards, including on-call processes, monitoring, and incident response
- Manage hiring, performance development, and career growth for team members
- Identify and remove technical debt, drive simplification, and improve developer productivity
- Represent the team in leadership reviews, communicating progress, risks, and trade-offs clearly
- Ensure compliance with payment industry standards (PCI-DSS) and regional regulatory requirements
A day in the life
Your morning might start with a stand-up where your team discusses progress on a new payment method integration for an emerging market. Mid-morning, you join an architecture review to evaluate a proposal for reducing time-to-market for AWS AI products, by rethinking payments configurability. Over lunch, you have a 1:1 with one of your engineers to discuss their path toward a Senior engineer role.
In the afternoon, you partner with your product manager to prioritize the next quarter's roadmap—balancing architectural and operational improvements with a high-impact new initiative. Later, you review business and operational metrics and notice an uptick in retry rates for a downstream dependency; you work with your on-call engineer to investigate and decide whether to escalate.
Your internal stakeholders include product managers, UX designers, partner payment platform teams, compliance/legal, and fraud/risk teams. Your customers are every AWS customer who reaches the payment step, making this one of the most impactful surfaces in the entire AWS experience.

We think big but ship incrementally—launching experiments, measuring impact, and iterating quickly
We value ownership: engineers on this team own their services end-to-end, from design through production operations We invest in each other's growth through mentorship, code reviews, and knowledge sharing We embrace the complexity of operating in a regulated, global environment and turn constraints into creative solutions.
