Job description

Hi, we are ecobee.

ecobee introduced the world’s first smart Wi-Fi thermostat to help millions of consumers save money, conserve energy, and bring home automation into their lives. That was just the beginning. We continue our pursuit to create technology that brings peace of mind into the home and allows people to focus on the moments that matter most. We take pride in making a meaningful difference to the environment, all while being part of the exciting, connected home revolution.

In 2021, ecobee became a subsidiary of Generac Power Systems. Generac introduced the first affordable backup generator and later created the category of automatic home standby generator. The company is committed to sustainable, cleaner energy products poised to revolutionize the 21st century electrical grid. Together, we take pride in making a meaningful difference to the environment.

Why we love to do what we do:

We’re helping build the world of tomorrow with solutions that improve everyday life while making a positive impact on the planet. Our products and services work in harmony to provide comfort, efficiency, and peace of mind for millions of homes and businesses. While we’re proud of what we’ve done so far, there’s still a lot we can do—and you can be part of it.

Join our extraordinary team.

We're a rapidly growing global tech company headquartered in Canada, in the heart of downtown Toronto, with an office in Leeds, UK, and remote ecopeeps in the US. We get to work with some of North America and UK's leading professionals. Our colleagues are proud to bring their authentic selves to work, confident that what we do is grounded in a greater purpose. We’re always looking for curious, talented, and passionate people to join our team.

Are you interested? Let's make it work.

Our people are empowered to take ownership of their schedules with workflows that allow for flexible hours. Based on your job, you have an option of office, hybrid or fully remote work. It is our top priority to keep employees safe. As we continue to take measures to keep employees safe in our offices, we have adopted a mandatory vaccine policy to be present in the physical Toronto office or other ecobee sponsored events in Ontario as of November 1, 2021. As such, to be in our office, it is required to acknowledge a formal attestation and submit accompanying proof of vaccination status. For the foreseeable future, we will be conducting our interviews and onboarding sessions through video. New team members will also be starting remotely, with all necessary equipment provided and shipped to them.

The role:

We are looking for a Backend Developer , which will provide an amazing opportunity to contribute to ecobee’s impact and learn from some strong Engineering Talent.

Our Backend team is packed with experienced developers who are amazing, and we guarantee that you will grow from working directly with them. We use leading edge technologies to innovate highly concurrent, Java-based server applications that directly impact ecobee’s success. You may work on deploying applications within ecobee's infrastructure as well as AWS and Google Cloud Platform. We encourage the freedom to investigate and evaluate new technologies to solve complex problems. As a result, your input will have a significant and direct impact on our company and objectives.

How You’ll Make an Impact:

  • Get hands-on with development of production features along with the rest of your team.
  • Participate in planning, scoping, and creating specification for these production features.
  • Learn about performance testing, unit testing, and debugging of critical high-volume systems.
  • Work with best of breed backend technologies and techniques.
  • Be mentored by senior software developers.

What You Bring to the Table:

  • A current Computer Science, Software, Computer or Electrical Engineering student.
  • Proficient at writing software in Golang, Java, C# or Node/Javascript with Typescript, Python
  • Good at getting your code to run on Linux-based systems.
  • Cloud Experience – you have some exposure to cloud technologies including AWS, Google Cloud (GCP), Azure or Heroku.
  • You are familiar with how to get your code "live", from getting it reviewed, merged into a production Git branch, and orchestrated on the cloud or in a datacenter. You care about the stability of what you build so our customers have a great experience 24/7
  • An interest or experience in working with databases
  • Eager to improve your software craft.
  • Curious, thoughtful, and practical!
  • Would like to make a difference in an intellectual and planet-positive environment.
  • Just so you know: the hired candidate will be required to complete a background check.

We’re up to incredible things. Come and be part of them.

What can you expect as an ecobee student?

  • The chance to meet and work with co-ops across all teams at ecobee
  • The opportunity to work in a fresh, dynamic, and ever-growing industry that is the SmartHome and IoT space
  • The visibility into a company that has an interesting mix of hardware and software consumer-facing businesses
  • Access to our headquarters, located near at the waterfront in Downtown Toronto, overlooking the lake (with complimentary pizza lunches every Thursday!)
  • The ability to make an environmental impact, both in your day job and outside the 9-5 with programs like ecobee acts!
  • Opportunities to learn and grow with our in-house learning enablement team, #ThinkLab
  • Small collaborative teams where you can impact both product and culture
  • Q&A sessions with senior leaders at ecobee
  • Weekly virtual game hangouts hosted by previous co-ops who’ve transitioned to full-time roles
  • Quarterly hack-a-thons, where you get a chance to work on whatever project you want!

ecobee believes all people have equal value and we are committed to providing a safe space for everyone. We welcome all applicants with diverse races, genders, ages, religions, identities, experiences, etc. and we will provide accommodation to all applicants throughout our hiring process.

“We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.”
