Job description

Job Description

The Team:

The Display Design and Development group is a dynamic, cross-functional hardware organization within GM’s Compute & Connectivity Hardware team, responsible for the end-to-end design and integration of next-generation in-vehicle display modules. The team owns the electrical and mechanical design of fully integrated display systems—spanning control boards, optics, mechanics, and firmware—while also reviewing and approving supplier and production design changes to ensure robustness, quality, and cost efficiency.

Working closely with software, vehicle integration, and design partners, the group is building an in-house display platform that can be reused across programs, enabling faster technology introduction, richer digital experiences, and a more consistent, premium display experience for customers.

The Role:

We are looking for a Staff Hardware Engineer to lead hardware definition and technical execution for display-focused diagnostic and interface integration work. This role is centered on display hardware bring-up, interface definition, issue investigation, and cross-functional problem solving, with particular emphasis on diagnostic architecture, FIDM and related interface documentation, and PRTS issue resolution.

The ideal candidate combines strong display hardware fundamentals with the ability to work across system, software, validation, and supplier teams to define robust hardware requirements, drive root-cause investigations, and improve product quality and launch readiness.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities):

  • Lead hardware definition and technical execution for display-related diagnostic and interface work.
  • Own and refine FIDM and other interface documentation needed to support system integration and issue resolution.
  • Drive Display Diagnostic 2.0 related hardware definition, implementation alignment, and technical problem solving.
  • Investigate hardware and system issues identified through PRTS and lead cross-functional root-cause analysis.
  • Support display ECU and subsystem bring-up, debugging, and validation.
  • Translate system-level needs into clear hardware requirements, interface definitions, and engineering actions.
  • Work closely with software, systems, validation, packaging, and supplier teams to resolve integration issues efficiently.
  • Review schematics, interface definitions, and hardware design decisions for technical completeness and robustness.
  • Identify design, integration, and validation gaps early and drive corrective actions.
  • Support sourcing, development, and launch activities by providing technical leadership in the display hardware domain.
  • Help improve engineering processes for issue tracking, documentation quality, and diagnostic readiness.

What Success Looks Like:

  • Diagnostic and interface requirements are clear, complete, and actionable.
  • FIDM and related documents are maintained at a level that improves integration efficiency.
  • PRTS issues are resolved with strong technical ownership and disciplined root-cause analysis.
  • Hardware and system issues are identified earlier and closed faster.
  • Cross-functional teams view this role as a key technical anchor for display hardware diagnostics and integration.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field.
  • Significant experience in automotive hardware engineering, with direct experience in display or ECU-related development.
  • Strong understanding of hardware interfaces, signal paths, power, and integration considerations for embedded automotive systems.
  • Experience with hardware bring-up, debugging, validation, and root-cause analysis.
  • Experience creating and maintaining interface and technical definition documents.

People Skills:

  • Proven ability to drive issue resolution across multiple teams and suppliers.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in a highly cross-functional environment

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Experience with automotive display systems, display ECUs, or related graphics/HMI hardware.
  • Experience with diagnostic architecture, failure analysis, and serviceability considerations.
  • Familiarity with PRTS-driven issue management and structured engineering problem solving.
  • Experience working with requirements, interface control documents, and change management in automotive programs.
  • Familiarity with high-speed display and ECU interfaces.
  • Experience supporting launches, supplier management, and technical reviews.

Company Vehicle:

Upon successful completion of a motor vehicle report review, you will be eligible to participate in a company vehicle evaluation program, through which you will be assigned a General Motors vehicle to drive and evaluate.

Note: program participants are required to purchase/lease a qualifying GM vehicle every four years unless one of a limited number of exceptions applies.

#LI-DH2

This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the selected candidate is expected to report to a specific location at least 3 times a week {or other frequency dictated by their manager}. The selected candidate will be required to travel <25% for this role. This job may be eligible for relocation benefits.
