QUALIFICATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor’s degree (B.E./B.Sc.) in Civil Engineering from a recognized university; a Master’s degree (M.E./M.Sc.) in Structural Engineering will be an added advantage.
  • 5–7 years of relevant professional experience in structural engineering, preferably with a reputable engineering consultancy, design firm, or multidisciplinary engineering organization.
  • Proven experience in structural analysis, design, design review, technical verification, and structural detailing for building and infrastructure projects.
  • Demonstrated experience in reviewing structural designs prepared by external consultants and providing technical comments, recommendations, and design verification.
  • Experience with structural design in seismic and challenging terrain conditions will be an advantage, particularly experience in Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral.
  • Experience in coordinating with consultants, architects, CAD/drafting teams, contractors, and field implementation teams.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABBILITES:
  • Strong knowledge of structural analysis and design principles, applicable BCP, IBC, ACI, ASCE 7, seismic codes, and relevant engineering standards.
  • Proficiency in ETABS, SAFE, SAP2000, or equivalent structural analysis and design software.
  • Demonstrated ability to review and verify structural models, calculations, drawings, specifications, and technical submissions.
  • Strong knowledge of reinforced concrete and steel structures, foundation systems, structural detailing, load assessment, seismic design, and geotechnical considerations.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess technical risks, identify discrepancies, and recommend practical and cost-effective solutions.
  • Good understanding of constructability, design optimization, value engineering, safety, and quality requirements.
  • Strong communication, coordination, documentation, and stakeholder-management skills, with the ability to work effectively with consultants, architects, CAD teams, contractors, and field teams.
  • Ability to provide timely technical support, resolve structural RFIs, and undertake site visits, particularly in challenging and seismic environments.
  • Ability to exercise sound professional judgment, prioritize technical issues, and make evidence-based recommendations.
  • Ability to work independently while effectively collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and managing multiple technical assignments within agreed timelines.

The position

The Aga Khan Agency for Habitat Pakistan invites applications for the position of Structural Design Engineer based in AKAHP Karachi Office. The role entails the following key responsibilities and requires candidates to meet the criteria outlined below.

JOB SUMMARY:
The Structural Design Engineer will serve as the primary focal point for providing technical expertise in structural analysis, design, review, and verification of Community Infrastructure and Building projects. The role involves the end-to-end review and verification of structural designs, analysis models, calculations, and drawings, as well as consultant coordination and technical support during construction. The individual will work closely with structural consultants, architects, CAD teams, site engineers, contractors, and the AKAHP Programme team to ensure that structural works comply with applicable codes and standards and are delivered safely, efficiently, and to the required quality standards.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Independently review, check, and verify structural analysis, design calculations, models, and drawings prepared by external Structural Consultants.
  • Ensure structural designs comply with the prevailing Building Code of Pakistan (BCP), IBC, ACI, ASCE, and other applicable structural and seismic codes/standards.
  • Independently perform structural analysis and model verification using ETABS, SAFE, SAP2000, or equivalent structural design software.
  • Review and verify the design of key structural elements, including foundations, columns, beams, slabs, shear walls, retaining walls, and steel structures.
  • Possess strong working knowledge of structural detailing and coordinate/follow up with CAD Technicians for preparation and finalization of structural drawings.
  • Verify dead, live, seismic, wind, snow loads and applicable load combinations, particularly considering the seismic and climatic conditions of the Program Area.
  • Review structural designs for safety, constructability, economy, and optimization, and recommend appropriate value-engineering solutions.
  • Review geotechnical/soil investigation reports and ensure that appropriate foundation systems and design parameters are incorporated into the structural design.
  • Coordinate with Structural Consultants, Architects, and field implementation teams to resolve structural design issues, discrepancies, RFIs, and site-related technical queries.
  • Conduct site visits, particularly within GBC, as required to verify critical structural works and their compliance with approved structural drawings and specifications.
  • Practical knowledge and previous structural design experience in the GBC region, particularly in seismic and challenging terrain conditions, will be considered an added advantage.
  • Provide timely technical support to field implementation teams across all programme areas and ensure effective resolution of structural RFIs and design-related issues.
