The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) provides a safe and efficient transportation system for the traveling public, while promoting economic development and preserving the environment of New Mexico. The Target Zero Office of Safety is the bureau that is leading the efforts of Target Zero, the NMDOT initiative to end traffic fatalities by the year 2050.
As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to receive three (3) days of administrative leave upon your start date.
This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.
Why does the job exist?
The Transportation Safety Program Manager is significant to the efforts to build transportation safety culture internal to NMDOT and to external partners. The position will support activities that create, cultivate, coordinate, and communicate transportation safety with transportation professionals, public health professionals, community advocates, and local leadership.
How does it get done?
The primary responsibilities of this position will include:
Data Analysis to include -
* Transportation data to identify procedures and systems that can improve the safety of transportation throughout the state.
* Available data to identify social conditions contributing to traffic crash data.
* Data to identify causal and correlative factors to traffic crash data.
* Traffic data review to recommend corrective actions that can be taken.
Additional duties -
* Support work with contractors on safety audits.
* Conduct training on the Safe System Approach and other transportation safety measures to NMDOT staff and community stakeholders.
* Provide technical assistance on Safe System Approach and other transportation safety standards to NMDOT staff, other transportation professionals, and community stakeholders.
* Engage community stakeholders, local government officials, and transportation professionals in supporting the Target Zero initiative.
* Hold public engagement with community stakeholders and individuals and companies impacted by transportation safety issues.

The NMDOT staff, transportation professionals doing work in New Mexico and community stakeholders for improving transportation safety in New Mexico.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have preferred education and/or experience in the following:
* Ability to analyze data to inform project development.
* Public speaking and communication skills.
* Program planning and evaluation.
* Policy analysis.
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field of study from an accredited college or university and two (2) years of professional level experience with a tactical impact directly related to the purpose of the position defined by the agency at the time of recruitment. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. Extensive travel throughout the state is required for meetings, trainings and community engagements.
